1941-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-007

Description

RPM-007 on the 1941-D Washington Quarter is a D/D South repunched mintmark variety, catalogued by VarietyVista under die pair UVC-0223, DMR-023. The secondary mintmark impression is displaced to the south relative to the final D position, a directional repunch characteristic of the hand-punch mintmark application process used at the Denver Mint during this era. Die state progression covers three stages: Stage A is Early Die State, though currently unconfirmed; Stage B — Middle Die State on both obverse and reverse — is defined by a die crack running from the S of PLURIBUS to the wing on the reverse; Stage C is confirmed to exist. The 1941-D Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver at the Denver Mint. The Washington Quarter design by John Flanagan was only nine years old at the time of this issue, and the D-mint quarters of the early 1940s have been the subject of extensive repunched mintmark research.
