Description

Cross-referenced as FS-101 in the Cherrypickers' Guide, DDO-001 is the primary and strongest doubled die obverse variety of the 1941 Denver Washington Quarter, documented by VarietyVista with die identification codes UVC-0186 and DMR-002. The doubling on this variety is a strong spread directed North-Northwest, visible on the motto GOD WE of IN GOD WE TRUST, the letters UST completing TRUST, the profile of Washington's nose, the upper eyelid of the obverse portrait, and the queue ribbon behind the president's head. This spread pattern results from a rotational misalignment between successive hub impressions during working die manufacture, with the secondary impression rotated slightly counterclockwise and offset to produce the North-Northwest spread direction. FS-101 status in the Cherrypickers' Guide marks this as a significant, collectible doubled die with documented price premiums in certified form. Die state progression for DDO-001 covers three stages: Stage A is an early die state (EDS) in which both obverse and reverse are in EDS condition; Stage B (MDS, unconfirmed) and Stage C (LDS, unconfirmed) have been proposed but await further documentation. The pairing designation UVC-0186/DMR-002 provides the framework for cross-referencing with the VarietyVista database. Collectors should compare the North-Northwest spread direction on GOD WE and TRUST lettering under magnification to distinguish DDO-001 from the weaker DDO-003 on the same date.
