Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die identification codes UVC-0188 and DMR-004, DDO-003 is the third catalogued doubled die obverse variety of the 1941 Denver Washington Quarter and is distinct from the stronger FS-101 DDO-001 on the same date. The doubling on DDO-003 is a medium spread visible on LIBERTY, the date numerals, the ribbon elements of Washington's tie, the letters IN of IN GOD WE TRUST, and the letters TR of TRUST — a spread pattern covering multiple inscription and portrait elements but at a lesser intensity than DDO-001's North-Northwest spread. This variety carries a paired reverse: the reverse die linked to DDO-003 is listed as DDR-002 in the VarietyVista system, making complete identification of this die marriage include both the obverse doubling characteristics and the associated reverse die. The die state progression for DDO-003 includes three stages: Stage A features a die crack running across the bust into the queue at early die state, with the reverse also in EDS condition; Stage B is mid die state (unconfirmed); Stage C is late die state (unconfirmed). The Stage A die crack across the bust into the queue provides an important secondary attribution marker that can assist in identifying EDS specimens of DDO-003 in the field, distinguishing this variety from DDO-001 even when doubling measurements are close. Collectors building comprehensive 1941-D Washington Quarter variety sets should acquire representatives of both DDO-001 and DDO-003 to illustrate the range of obverse hub doubling on this date.
