1941-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-006

Description

Showing a D/D East repunching on the 1941 Denver Mint Washington Quarter, RPM-006 is tracked by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-0222 and DMR-021. The die progresses through three well-documented states. Stage A is early die state, currently unconfirmed by published photographs. Stage B reveals substantial die deterioration on the reverse: a die crack extends from the S of PLURIBUS to the wing, another crack runs down the eagle's right wing, and light cracking appears across the upper hair on the obverse, eventually extending across the bust and into the queue behind and into the field in front. By Stage C the die had reached late die state, also unconfirmed photographically. Washington Quarters of 1941 were struck just months before the United States entered World War II, and Denver's production that year was substantial. The eastward shift of the secondary mintmark impression indicates the die was repositioned laterally during the hand-punching process, a common occurrence when mint employees adjusted placement after an initial strike that landed slightly off target.
