1941-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Cross-referenced as Fivaz-Stanton FS-501, this VarietyVista-documented 1941-D Jefferson Nickel exhibits a D/D Southeast displacement from the Denver Mint in only the fourth year of Felix Schlag's design. Die markers UVC-471 / DMR-004 track four stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with weak secondary mintmark at MDS and obverse at MDS; Stage C with strong secondary mintmark at LMDS, a die crack south from right dome between pillar #3 and #4 to steps, and obverse at LMDS; Stage D at LDS (unconfirmed). Unusually, the secondary mintmark strengthens from weak at MDS to strong at LMDS, likely reflecting differential wear revealing previously obscured punch detail. The FS-501 listing confirms this as an actively sought Cherrypickers' variety. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1941-D preceded the wartime silver alloy by one year.
