1941-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Attributed by Whaden Curtis, this 1941 Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel is a Class II Distorted Hub doubled die reverse with particularly attractive spread. Doubling is very nice on E PLURIBUS UNUM, increasing in strength from left to right. Additional doubling shows on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, and the right side of Monticello. Tripling is visible on CENTS and AMERICA, adding further complexity to this die marriage. Die markers on the reverse include a slanted die scratch to the lower right of the S of CENTS, a series of slanted die scratches through the first U of UNUM, and a slanted die scratch above the second T of STATES. No significant obverse die markers have been noted. Class II Distorted Hub doubling results from a misaligned or tilted hub during die production, creating spread that progressively widens across the die face. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at Denver, the 1941-D Jefferson Nickel was produced in the final year before wartime silver alloy replaced the standard composition from 1942 to 1945. WDDR-001 stands as the primary doubled die reverse for this date and mint.
