1941-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

RPM-002 on the 1941-D Jefferson Nickel shows a southward secondary mintmark impression, designated D/D South, cataloged UVC-007 and DMR-003. The mintmark punch was applied twice to the working die, with the first impression landing south of the final position, leaving a ghost D below the primary. Three die stages document the variety's progression. Stage A (EDS) carries the strongest secondary mintmark expression and includes a die gouge beneath the mintmark; the obverse is LDS at this reverse state. Stage B (MDS) is unconfirmed pending additional specimens. Stage C (LDS) shows a weak secondary mintmark remnant, with the obverse also in LDS condition. Jefferson Nickels carry the mintmark on the reverse at the right side of Monticello. The 1941-D was struck at Denver and features the standard copper-nickel alloy, a year before wartime silver alloy coinage began. The die gouge beneath the mintmark in Stage A provides a valuable secondary diagnostic for early-state examples and can help separate RPM-002 from generic die deterioration.
