1940 (D) Mercury Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-013

Description

1940-D WDDO-013 is a doubled die obverse on the 1940-D Mercury dime, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling, a very close spread toward the center, is on the date and the designer's initials. On the obverse, a die scratch heads NNE off the back of the neck. The reverse carries a repunched mint mark that Wexler lists as 1940-D WRPM-003, and two parallel die gouges cut through the U and N of UNITED, the U at its top right and the N at its top left. The repunched mint mark was submitted by Frank Doty, Jr., and the doubled die by Thomas McGowan. Wexler lists no cross-references.
