1940 (D) Mercury Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-011

Description

1940-D WDDO-011 is a doubled die obverse on the 1940-D Mercury dime, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling, a very close Class II spread toward the center, is on the date. On the obverse, a short SW/NE die scratch lies above the R in TRUST; a group of SSW/NNE scratches lies left of the designer's initials and continue above them; and a SSW/NNE die crack is on the lower back of the cheek. The reverse is itself a doubled die, listed by Wexler as 1940-D WDDR-006, with a counterclockwise (CCW) spread pivoting near 6:00 on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the tops of the axe and fasces, and the upper right branch with its leaves. From the ribbon at the base of the fasces, two die scratches run SE and east and meet at the D in DIME, at its top left. One gouge juts from the F in OF at its top left, another from the leaf under the top dot. Thomas McGowan submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references, and its comments note that CONECA lists the doubled die reverse and mentions the doubled die obverse without listing it.
