1940 (D) Mercury Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009

Description

1940-D WDDO-009 is a doubled die obverse on the 1940-D Mercury dime, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling, a close Class II spread toward the center, is on the date and the designer's initials; the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST show it very slightly. On the obverse, in the date, a die scratch links the base of the 1 with the 9's center left, running NE; another heads ENE off the 9's upper right; and a third heads ESE off the upper right of the L in LIBERTY. On the reverse, a SW-to-NE scratch crosses the lower E and the central D of UNITED; under the A in STATES, toward its left side, is a short vertical gouge; and a short gouge juts from the center left of the C in AMERICA. Tony Russo submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
