1940-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-002
ErrorDescription
Subject to ongoing numismatic debate, this 1940 Denver Jefferson Nickel WRPM-002 is believed to be a D/Inverted D — one of the most unusual RPM configurations, where the mintmark punch was flipped upside down for one application. The evidence centers on a raised curvature to the left of the primary D consistent with the rounded portion of an inverted D, where the bowl appears on the opposite side from normal orientation. A vertical bar of the D is visible inside the primary D at a slight angle, adding another element consistent with rotational inversion. The Wexler Team catalogs this variety while noting the attribution remains debated, as inverted mintmark repunchings are inherently difficult to confirm because distinguishing an inverted letter from other die anomalies requires ruling out alternatives. The 1940-D Jefferson Nickel was struck early in the series' history, just two years after the design's 1938 debut. If confirmed, the inverted D would represent a rare error type where the die setter inserted the punch upside down before applying a corrective second punch in normal orientation.

- Discovered by Eric Axtell Cross References: None known Comments: This variety is sure to be debated. I believe that it is a D/Inverted D. The curvature to the left of the primary D is raised and consistent with an inverted D. A vertical bar of the D shows inside the primary D at a slight angle still consistent with the external curvature I would welcome the opportunity to study an uncirculated EDS specimen of this variety.
