1940 (D) Jefferson Nickel - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-002

Description

1940-D WRPM-002 is a repunched mint mark on the 1940-D Jefferson nickel, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as D/D Tilted (Rotated), plus a possible D over an inverted D. Wexler notes no significant obverse markers. On the reverse, a die gouge sits above the left porch, and a small gouge lies inside the upper C in AMERICA. Eric Axtell submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references. The Wexler entry's comments expect the variety to be debated and give the writer's belief that this is an inverted D under the primary D (D/Inverted D): to the primary D's left, the curve is raised, as an inverted D's would be, and inside the primary D, slightly angled, a D's vertical bar is visible, which still agrees with the outer curve. The writer adds that they would welcome the chance to study an uncirculated early die state (EDS) specimen.

• None known Comments: This variety is sure to be debated. I believe that it is a D/Inverted D. The curvature to the left of the primary D is raised and consistent with an inverted D.
