Description
The 1940 (D) Jefferson Nickel is a nickel minted at the Denver Mint, within the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series. The Denver Mint struck 43,540,000 nickels dated 1940. The obverse features Thomas Jefferson facing left and the reverse displays Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate. Steady pre-war production from all three mints. Denver mintage exceeded 43 million. Coined at Denver's facility, which transitioned from processing Colorado gold rush metal to full-scale coin production in 1906. Estimated market value ranges from $0.12 to $19 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5 grams, 21.2 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #4008.
