1940-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

As the primary catalog entry for the 1940-D date, this VarietyVista-documented Jefferson Nickel displays a D/D Rotated CW repunched mintmark from only the third year of the series after replacing the Buffalo Nickel in 1938. Die markers UVC-002 / DMR-002 track four stages — an unusually extended die life: Stage A with reverse and obverse at EDS; Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed); Stage D with reverse and obverse at VLDS. The four-stage progression from EDS through VLDS documents a die pair that remained in service far beyond the typical three-stage lifecycle. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, Felix Schlag's design places the D mintmark to the right of Monticello.
