1940-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-012
Error
Description
On this early Denver-mint Jefferson Nickel, the DDR-012 exhibits light spread on FIVE CENTS and the LLO of MONTICELLO. VarietyVista catalogs the variety with UVC-1737 and DMR-016 across three die states. Stage A is the early die state, unconfirmed. Stage B reaches mid-die state, marked by a diagonal die gouge through the right base edge and a die chip in the upper portion of the 4 in the date on the obverse. Stage C is the unconfirmed late die state. The 1940-D Jefferson Nickel was struck during the second full year of Felix Schlag's design, which won a public competition in 1938 to replace the Buffalo Nickel. The original Monticello reverse featured a straight-on view of Jefferson's Virginia home, and the architectural lettering beneath the building provided ample surface area for hub doubling to manifest. The LLO spread within MONTICELLO and the FIVE CENTS inscription give collectors two distinct zones to examine when searching for this DDR-012 among early Jefferson Nickel production from Denver.
