Recorded by VarietyVista, the 1940-D DDR-008 Jefferson Nickel shows light spread on FIVE CENTS and the LLO of MONTICELLO — a localized doubling pattern affecting the denomination and the terminal letters of the building's name while leaving other reverse inscription elements undisturbed. Die markers UVC-1612 / DMR-012 document three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS featuring a die scratch running from the M of AMERICA to the last L of MONTICELLO and a die scratch connecting the tops of all outside rim lettering; and Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The die scratch connecting the tops of all rim lettering in Stage B is an exceptionally long and distinctive marker — a single continuous scratch traversing virtually the entire circumference of the reverse die face, likely produced during a die maintenance operation where an abrasive tool was drawn around the die's perimeter. This circumferential scratch provides an unmistakable identification feature for coins struck from this specific reverse die at the MDS stage or later. The Jefferson Nickel was designed by Felix Schlag and struck at the Denver Mint in 1940, only the third year of Jefferson Nickel production following the series' 1938 debut. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.0 grams with a diameter of 21.21 mm, the 1940-D represents early Denver Mint production in the series. The light spread limited to FIVE CENTS and the end of MONTICELLO suggests the hub displacement vector was oriented toward the lower-right reverse quadrant, where these design elements are concentrated, with the doubling attenuating to undetectable levels in areas further from the displacement axis.
