1940-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

Displaying an unusual combination of Class II distorted hub and Class VI distended hub doubling, this 1940-D Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse exhibits strong quadrupling on FIVE CENTS — a relatively rare occurrence where four distinct impressions of the lettering are visible rather than the typical two. The quadrupling effect results from the combined action of two different doubling mechanisms operating during the hubbing process, each contributing its own displacement to produce the layered appearance. This variety is also noted as a possible die marriage with a D/D West repunched mintmark (RPM), which would give collectors two collectible attributions on a single coin. Die markers include a die crack at the collar on the reverse and a die scratch above 940 in the date on the obverse. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 1940-D WDDR-004, the quadrupled FIVE CENTS makes this one of the more visually dramatic Jefferson Nickel doubled die varieties from the pre-war era, when Felix Schlag’s design was in only its third year of production at the Denver Mint.
