1940-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005
ErrorDescription
Combining two uncommon doubling classes, the 1940-D WDDR-005 Jefferson nickel exhibits Class II and Class V hub doubling — distorted and pivoted — across AMERICA, CENTS, and LLO of MONTICELLO, while Class II doubling alone appears on E PLURIBUS UNUM. Dual-class varieties arise when the hub contacts the die with both a warped surface and a rotational component, producing spread that varies in both magnitude and direction across the design. This variety dates to just the third year of the Jefferson nickel series, which debuted in 1938. Die markers aid attribution: on the obverse, a die dot sits between and below the D of GOD and the W of WE; on the reverse, a light die scratch extends north from the right side of the small right window on Monticello's facade. The window scratch and die dot together confirm the specific working die independent of the doubling. Early Denver Mint Jefferson nickel varieties remain scarce in the marketplace, as the series was new and few collectors systematically preserved die varieties during this period.
