1940-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001
Error
Description
First cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1940 Denver Mint Mercury Dime, DDO-001 presents a light spread on the date, designer's initials AW, and the Y of LIBERTY. VarietyVista assigns UVC-106 and DMR-002, with a CONECA cross-reference of 1-O-II-C confirming Class II hub doubling. The light spread indicates a relatively minor secondary hub impression shift — enough to produce detectable doubling but requiring careful examination under magnification to identify. The D mintmark identifies Denver as the striking facility, and curatorial notes indicate a specimen is needed for photographic documentation, suggesting this variety remains underrepresented in reference collections. Weinman's Winged Liberty Head was entering its twenty-fourth year of production in 1940. The 1940-D was struck in 90% silver at 17.9mm, with Denver's D mintmark on the reverse near the base of the fasces. Examine the date numerals, AW monogram, and the terminal Y of LIBERTY for the light doubled contour.
