Description

From the San Francisco Mint's pre-war production, this VarietyVista-documented 1939-S Lincoln Wheat Cent features prominent die gouges through IN GOD WE TRUST that appeared early in the die's life. Die markers UVC-077 / DMR-004 track three stages: Stage A with die gouges through IN GOD WE TRUST at EDS, light die scratches north-south on obverse, die crack from C of CENT north to rim at LDS, die cracks in left wheat lines and grains, and die cracks in right wheat lines; Stage B with most die scratches on obverse worn away at EMDS and reverse at LDS; Stage C with obverse at LDS and reverse at VLDS. The rapid progression of reverse wheat ear die cracks alongside the gradual erasure of obverse die scratches reveals asymmetric wear between the two dies. Struck in 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm.
