Description

1939-S WDDO-002 is a doubled die obverse on the 1939-S Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Beneath the normal eyelid lies an extra eyelid. The obverse also carries a repunched mint mark, an S/S Northeast that Wexler's RPM files list as 1939-S 1¢ WRPM-001. Stage A shows a lathe mark near the rim, beneath the back of the bust. Stage B keeps that marker and adds an east-west crack across the head and hair below the hairline; Stage C still has that crack, and on Stage D the crack in the hair is stronger. Reverse Stage A has a gouge below PLURIBUS' S, right of center. Stage B keeps it and adds cracks: three on the right wheat grains, two on the right wheat lines, others on the upper right and upper left grains of the left wheat ear, and more on the left wheat lines. Stage C is a new reverse die, with a NW/SE scratch between the bottoms of the I and T in UNITED, a NW/SE scratch through the top of AMERICA's first A, and a short scratch running SW from the underside of the E's center bar in CENT (at its middle) to the vertical bar. On Stage D a heavy scratch runs south from the lower center of PLURIBUS' S, and the Stage C scratches are weaker. Paul Kjellander submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
