1939 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, the 1939 Washington Quarter WDDO-008 displays a close clockwise spread pivoting from approximately the 2:00 position on IN GOD WE TRUST. The obverse carries a constellation of die markers that aid in pinning down this specific die: two nearly parallel scratches run southwest from the lower left of B in LIBERTY, a die crack extends north from the top of I in IN, and a short scratch trends southeast from the bottom right of the first T in TRUST. Between W and E of WE sits a small die gouge, while two additional gouges appear above the top left of E in WE, and two short parallel scratches run northwest-to-southeast to the right of that same letter. The reverse offers its own diagnostics, including a short die gouge left of center in the U of UNITED and circular die scratches distributed throughout the eagle design. Cross-referenced as Crawford CDDO-001, this Depression-era quarter variety emerged during a year when mintages were beginning to recover from their mid-1930s lows, making documented die varieties from this transitional period particularly valued by Washington Quarter specialists.
