1939 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1939 WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1939 Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. A close clockwise (CW) spread, pivoting from 12:00, shows on the bottom of the ribbon, the date and IN GOD WE TRUST. On the obverse, an E/W crack crosses the top of the head and a thin E/W crack crosses the ribbon. NW/SE scratches run through IN GOD WE TRUST, many scratches crisscross the LIBE of LIBERTY, two almost parallel scratches head ESE from the lower right of the B in LIBERTY, a scratch heads east from the top of that B, and short scratches run SE off the nose. On the reverse, a crack links the upper S in PLURIBUS with the top of the eagle's left wing, an E/W crack crosses the O in OF, and the eagle's right wing has a crack running down it. Many E/W scratches lie between QUARTER DOLLAR and the branch stems, and a scratch heads east from the last A in AMERICA. John A. Wexler submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
