Description

Light hub doubling spreads across IN GOD WE TRUST and the date on this 1939 Washington quarter DDO-014, with extra thickness accumulating on LIBERTY. John Flanagan's Washington quarter was struck in 90% silver through 1964. VarietyVista tracks this variety as UVC-0099 and DMR-016. The die progressed through four documented stages: Stage A is an early die state (EDS, unconfirmed); Stage B is a middle die state (MDS, unconfirmed) during which a die clash developed under the chin; Stage C is a late die state (LDS) characterized by a die crack across the upper hair, a die crack across the bust, a die crack down the eagle's right wing, and a die crack from the S of PLURIBUS down the eagle's left wing; Stage D is a very late die state (VLDS) when both dies had reached end of service life. Collectors pursuing DDO-014 for a date set or die-stage progression will find the Stage C die cracks especially useful as locating features — the crack across the upper hair is visible without magnification on well-struck late die state examples, making this one of the more easily spotted die-crack configurations on Washington quarter doubled die varieties.
