1939 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-004
Error
Description
DDO-004 on the 1939 Washington Quarter exhibits a light rotational spread on the RTY of LIBERTY and a strong spread on WE of IN GOD WE TRUST, making the motto the most diagnostically useful area for attribution. The quarter was struck in 90% silver at the Philadelphia Mint. Die markers are catalogued under UVC-0089 and DMR-006, providing the VarietyVista die pair identification. Die state progression spans three documented stages: Stage A records both the obverse and reverse at Early Die State; Stage B records both at Middle Die State; Stage C advances to Late Die State on the obverse, with a die crack running down the eagle's right wing and a second die crack extending east from the eagle's head to the wing — progressive cracking that developed through the die's working life. The Washington Quarter design, featuring John Flanagan's portrait of Washington on the obverse and a heraldic eagle on the reverse, debuted in 1932 and continued in 90% silver composition through 1964. Cross-reference: VarietyVista DDO-004, UVC-0089, DMR-006.
