1937-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-002

Description

WRPM-002 documents a multi-stage die progression for this 1937-S Lincoln Wheat Cent repunched mintmark variety, cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #2 and Coppercoins 1937S-1MM-002. Obverse Stage A shows a die chip on top of the T in LIBERTY, a strong lathe mark above GOD, and east-west die scratches through the shoulder fold. By Obverse Stage B all Stage A markers except the chip above T have been abraded away, and the secondary mint mark impression is very weak. Reverse Stage A carries a weak die crack along the right edge of the upper right wheat grains; by Reverse Stage B the crack has strengthened at the right wheat grains and light die cracks have emerged on the upper left wheat grains. The 1937-S Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck in bronze — 95% copper, 5% tin and zinc — at the San Francisco Mint under Victor David Brenner's design. The careful stage-by-stage documentation of both obverse and reverse die progression makes WRPM-002 a reference example for multi-stage RPM tracking.
