1937-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Catalogued by VarietyVista with markers UVC-058 and DMR-002, the 1937-S Lincoln Wheat cent RPM-001 is the primary repunched mintmark variety documented for this date. Repunched mintmarks arise when the mintmark loglet was positioned slightly off-register on the first punch and corrected with a second strike, leaving the original impression partially visible. Three die stages are recorded. Stage A (Early Die State) shows the secondary mintmark at its strongest and most diagnostic. Stage B (Middle Die State) presents a medium-strength secondary impression as the die wears, with the reverse at Very Late Die State (VLDS). Stage C is Late Die State (unconfirmed). The progression from strong to medium secondary mintmark visibility across stages is characteristic: continued use causes the shallower secondary impression to gradually fill with metal transfer. The 1937-S Lincoln Wheat cent is a bronze coin produced at the San Francisco Mint during the heart of the Wheat cent era, designed by Victor David Brenner. RPM-001 represents the strongest and most prominently listed variety for this date and mint; Stage A examples showing the full secondary S impression are especially sought.
