Description

Designated UVC-238 with die marriage DMR-015, this 1936 Denver Mint Buffalo Nickel is the fourteenth cataloged repunched mintmark for the date. The higher UVC number of 238, compared to the sequential DMR numbering, reflects the variety's later addition to the universal variety catalog after the initial research sequence had been established. Denver's substantial 1936 output of 24.81 million Buffalo Nickels required dozens of die pairs, each receiving its mintmark through individual hand-punching. RPM-014 extends an already deep catalog of repunched mintmark varieties for this date, documenting yet another instance where slight positional shifts between punch applications left visible traces on the finished coins. The Buffalo Nickel series was in its penultimate full production year by 1936, with Fraser's design giving way to the Jefferson Nickel in 1938. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel, the alloy's hardness preserved fine mintmark details through circulation, allowing even subtle repunching to remain detectable on well-preserved specimens.
