Cataloged as UVC-173 with die marriage DMR-004, this 1936 Denver Mint Buffalo Nickel carries the third attributed repunched mintmark for the date. The variety originates from multiple applications of the D mintmark punch during die preparation, a manual process that frequently produced slight positional differences between successive impressions. With a mintage of 24.81 million pieces, the 1936-D represents one of the most heavily produced Denver Mint Buffalo Nickels, and the large number of working dies consumed during this output generated a correspondingly extensive catalog of mintmark varieties. RPM-003 sits within an expanding sequence of repunched mintmarks for 1936-D that documents the range of positional variations the hand-punching process could produce. The Buffalo Nickel's 75% copper, 25% nickel alloy and Fraser's Type 2 design with the bison on a flat, recessed plain were unchanged throughout the series.
