1936-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Cross-referenced as Fivaz-Stanton FS-502 in the Cherrypickers' Guide, the 1936-D RPM-002 Buffalo Nickel was documented by VarietyVista and exhibits a D/D Northwest repunched mintmark where the initial D was placed slightly southeast of the intended position and a corrective second punch established the final placement to the northwest, leaving the remnant of the first impression visible below and to the right of the primary letter. Die markers UVC-172 / DMR-003 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); and Stage C with reverse and obverse at LDS. The confirmed LDS designation for Stage C indicates that late die state specimens have been positively identified, showing the accumulated wear and potential die cracks characteristic of a die nearing the end of its useful service life. The FS-502 Cherrypickers' listing validates this as a recognized variety actively sought by collectors searching through Buffalo Nickel rolls and accumulations. James Earle Fraser's Buffalo Nickel was struck at the Denver Mint in 1936, composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.0 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. The 1936-D had a mintage of approximately 24.8 million pieces, the penultimate year of Denver Mint Buffalo Nickel production before the series was replaced by the Jefferson Nickel in 1938. Repunched mintmarks on Buffalo Nickels are especially collectible because the D mintmark's position beneath the denomination FIVE CENTS on the reverse made it susceptible to displacement during manual punch application, and the relatively short production span of the series (1913-1938) limits the total population of RPM varieties compared to longer-running denominations.
