Description
The 1936-D Buffalo Nickel RPM-011 is a D/D West repunched mintmark variety cataloged by VarietyVista under die tracking codes UVC-181 and DMR-012. The mintmark was initially punched and a secondary punch applied to the west, producing a displaced ghost impression to the east of the final mintmark. Three die stages are documented: Stage A (EDS, unconfirmed), Stage B (MDS, confirmed on both obverse and reverse), and Stage C (LDS, unconfirmed). The year 1936 falls in the penultimate production year for Denver-mint Buffalo Nickels before the series concluded in 1938. D-mint issues of this period frequently show mintmark repunching due to hand-applied punches, and WDDO examples add value when die markers can be confirmed under magnification. New color, high-magnification photographs from a diagnostic specimen are needed to confirm Stage A and Stage C attributions.
