Description

RPM-008 on the 1936-D Buffalo Nickel presents a doubled mintmark cataloged UVC-178 and DMR-009, with the secondary D impression offset to the northwest of the primary. The D/D Northwest designation indicates the earlier punch landed up and to the left before the final mintmark position was established. Three die stages document the variety's progression across the die's working life: Stage A (EDS), Stage B (MDS), and Stage C (LDS), each reflecting incremental die wear and the diminishing visibility of the secondary mintmark impression as the die progresses. Buffalo Nickels of the 1930s carry the mintmark on the reverse below FIVE CENTS, and all mintmarks during this era were applied by hand to individual working dies, making punch displacement a common occurrence. The 1936-D had a mintage of approximately 24.8 million pieces, and RPM-008 represents a distinctly attributed subpopulation within that mintage. Confirming attribution requires resolution of the secondary northwest impression under 5x–8x magnification, using oblique lighting to bring out the ghost mintmark contours against the coin's field.
