1936-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

Displaying a D/D repunched mintmark displaced to the northeast, this 1936 Denver Mint Buffalo Nickel is cataloged as UVC-175 with die marriage DMR-006. The northeastward shift places the secondary mintmark impression below and to the left of the final D, providing a directional diagnostic that distinguishes RPM-005 from the many other repunched mintmark varieties attributed for this date. Denver's 1936 production of 24.81 million Buffalo Nickels ranks among the highest outputs for any D-mint year in the series, and the extensive die consumption generated a rich catalog of RPM varieties with diverse directional displacements. The hand-punching of mintmarks into individual working dies was inherently imprecise, and the northeast displacement on this variety captures one of many possible directional outcomes from that manual process. Fraser's Type 2 reverse, featuring the bison standing on a recessed flat plain, was by this point a well-established and familiar design. The 75% copper, 25% nickel composition remained the standard alloy for five-cent pieces throughout the Buffalo Nickel era.
