1936-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-004
Error
Description
RPM-004 on the 1936-D Buffalo Nickel is a triple repunched mintmark, cataloged UVC-174 and DMR-005, and cross-referenced as FS-511. The working die received three discrete D mintmark punch applications, each landing northeast of the previous, producing a D/D/D Northeast, Northeast stacking visible at the north and east edges of the primary mintmark under magnification. Despite surface similarities to an overmintmark, there is no solid evidence this variety is a D/S; the expert consensus confirms all three impressions originate from D punches. Three die stages are documented: Stage A (EDS) is unconfirmed pending additional specimens; Stage B (MDS) is confirmed; Stage C (LDS) is unconfirmed. The FS-511 cross-reference anchors this variety in the Fivaz-Stanton reference, increasing its appeal to variety collectors who prioritize FS-listed attributions. Triple mintmark repunchings on Buffalo Nickels are proportionally rarer than simple doubles because three distinct hand-punch applications were required, and the resulting die was more likely to be retired or ground down before extensive production runs could dilute the surviving population.
