Description

Holding the -001 position in VarietyVista's catalog for the 1935 Washington silver quarter, DDR-001 — tracked under UVC-0030 with die markers reference DMR-006 — represents the earliest-cataloged or most significant doubled die reverse for this Depression-era date. The variety produces medium extra thickness on a sweeping range of reverse elements: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, QUARTER DOLLAR, the olive and oak stems, the leaves, and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The breadth of the doubling across virtually every major reverse design element suggests a substantial hub misalignment that affected the entire reverse die face rather than a localized displacement concentrated in one zone. Three die stages are documented. Stage A at early die state remains unconfirmed, and Stage C at late die state is also unconfirmed, while Stage B is confirmed with both reverse and obverse presenting in mid die state. The confirmed MDS stage means that the most commonly encountered examples of DDR-001 show moderate die wear — some softening of the finest details and early flow lines — rather than the pristine crispness of EDS or the heavy deterioration of LDS.
