1934 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-013

Description

Also struck from a Medium Motto obverse die (ODV-002) like its companion DDO-009, the 1934 Washington Quarter DDO-013 displays light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST from a different die marriage. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-0466 with die marriage DMR-019, this variety is distinguished from DDO-009 by its late die state characteristics: rather than a single strong crack across the lower wreath, DDO-013's late die state shows a light die crack in the hair area combined with a light die crack across the bust — a different pattern of die deterioration that confirms this is a separate working die. Early and mid die states remain unconfirmed, while the LDS shows the hair crack, bust crack, and reverse deterioration. The 1934 Washington Quarter's Medium Motto variety represents one of the transitional design states from the early years of Flanagan's design, and multiple DDOs from Medium Motto dies demonstrate that the hubbing process required multiple impressions that occasionally produced misalignment. Collectors differentiating DDO-013 from DDO-009 should look for the hair and bust crack pattern rather than the wreath crack that characterizes DDO-009.
