Description
DDO-001, which Wexler numbers WDDO-001, is a doubled die obverse on the 1934 Medium Motto Washington quarter with strong spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date and LIBERTY. Both catalogs list it as Cherrypickers FS-101; Wexler writes it FS-25-1934-101 (009). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a major Class I clockwise spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the date and also the queue. Obverse stage A has a short scratch heading WNW off the 9 at its upper left and a gouge heading ESE from above the upper right of the I in LIBERTY. Obverse stage B is heavily abraded, with strong east-west scratches crossing the queue and reaching the neck's lower back. Obverse stage C is also heavily abraded; the queue scratch is very faint and an east-west crack crosses the hair at the top of the head. Wexler's reverse stage A is itself a doubled die (Class VI), cataloged as 1934 WDDR-001, with massive extra thickness spreading toward the center on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, QUARTER DOLLAR, the leaves, branches, the eagle's head and its wings, and a short gouge heading ENE from the lower right of the A in STATES. Reverse stage B is a new reverse die with nothing noted, and reverse stage C has nothing noted. Ron Pope submitted stages A and C and Jim Lafferty stage B. CONECA lists the die as 1-O-I and Breen as #4272. VarietyVista credits the Halpern Catalog and Lee Hiemke. It gives the obverse as ODV-002 (Medium Motto) and lists the reverse for stages B through D as DDR-001. Under UVC-0009 and DMR-004: an early stage A is unconfirmed; in stage B the obverse is in a middle state and the reverse, listed as DDR-001, is middle too; stage C adds a light crack in the upper hair (middle) with the reverse late-middle; stage D has a crack from the forehead to the L of LIBERTY (late) and a late reverse. Under UVC-0010 and DMR-005, stage E pairs a very late obverse with a changed reverse die in an early state, and stage F has the obverse in an even later state than E with a crack from the rim to the wing through the right upright of the M in AMERICA, in a middle state.
