1934 Washington Quarter - Medium Motto - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001 / DDR-001

Description

1934 WDDR-001 is the Wexler team's doubled die reverse on the 1934 Medium Motto Washington quarter, struck with the major doubled die obverse Wexler lists as WDDO-001A; VarietyVista catalogs the same reverse as DDR-001. Both catalogs credit Ron Pope. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes massive extra thickness that spreads toward the center on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, QUARTER DOLLAR, the leaves and branches, the eagle's head and the wings. On the reverse a short gouge heads ENE from the lower right of the A in STATES. Wexler adds that the paired obverse shows a major Class I clockwise spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the date and the queue, with a short scratch heading WNW off the 9 at its upper left and a gouge heading ESE from above the upper right of the I in LIBERTY. CONECA lists this reverse as 1-R-VI. VarietyVista describes strong extra thickness on every letter and on the outer design elements. It gives the obverse as ODV-002 (Medium Motto), notes that obverse is its DDO-001, and cites FS-101. Under UVC-0009 and DMR-004, stage A has the reverse in an early die state and a crack in the upper hair in a middle state, with the obverse listed as DDO-001. A middle stage B and a late stage C have not been confirmed.
