1934 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-010
Error
Description
Light hub doubling on IN, TRU of TRUST, and the E of LIBERTY identifies this tenth doubled die obverse for the 1934 Washington Quarter, with distinctive die crack progression documented across three stages. Cataloged by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-0451, DMR-016, the die stage history is particularly detailed: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B showing light die cracks in the hair and across the bust plus a crack from the S of PLURIBUS to the wing at lower mid die state, and Stage C with both obverse and reverse at late die state. The comment "Obverse is ODV-002 (Medium Motto)" links this to the second obverse die variety for the date, characterized by a medium-sized IN GOD WE TRUST motto. The 1934 Washington Quarter was only the third year of John Flanagan's design, which debuted in 1932 to commemorate George Washington's 200th birthday and has continued in modified form ever since. The 1934 issue was the first year that quarter production resumed after a hiatus in 1933 during the depths of the Great Depression, when no quarters were struck. This production gap makes 1934 quarters historically significant as the resumption of a denomination that had been suspended due to economic crisis. Ten documented obverse doubled dies for 1934 demonstrates the variety research depth on this early Washington Quarter date, and the die crack progression across stages provides a timeline of how the die deteriorated during its working life.
