Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-0450 with die marriage DMR-015, the 1934 Washington Quarter DDO-009 shows light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, struck from the Medium Motto obverse die variety (ODV-002). The 1934 Washington Quarter is notable for having two distinct motto sizes — Heavy Motto and Medium Motto — reflecting different hub states used during John Flanagan's design's second year of production. Three die states are documented: early and mid die states remain unconfirmed, while the late die state reveals a strong die crack across the lower wreath extending to the R of DOLLAR on the reverse, accompanied by LDS deterioration on the obverse. This prominent late die state crack provides an additional diagnostic beyond the light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, as coins from the die's final stage of service show both the obverse doubling and the dramatic reverse die crack. The Medium Motto designation adds a design variety component to this doubled die, creating a dual-interest coin for collectors who track both hub doubling and motto size variants in the early Washington Quarter series.
