1934 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002
Error
Description
Cataloged as UVC-011 and DMR-006 in the VarietyVista attribution system, the 1934 Washington Quarter DDO-002 exhibits light but collectible spread on LIBERTY, the date, and IN and TR of TRUST. The obverse uses ODV-002, the Medium Motto variety, adding a second layer of die-variety interest. Three documented die stages trace the coin through its production life: Stage A represents the early die state, currently unconfirmed. Stage B, a mid-die-state, features a distinctive die chip on the cheek behind the lower nose on the obverse, while the reverse also presents at MDS. Stage C brings late-die-state deterioration—a die crack running across the bust, another crack extending across the upper hair to the T of LIBERTY, a die crack descending down the eagle's right wing to the U of QUARTER, a crack running from the back of the eagle's head to the left wing, and a further crack from US of PLURIBUS to the wing. This progressive die failure makes Stage C specimens particularly interesting to variety specialists.
