1934-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

RPM-001, the primary repunched mintmark variety for the 1934-D Washington Quarter, documents a west-direction D/D repunch on a die also designated ODV-002 — an independently catalogued obverse die variety — catalogued UVC-0445 and DMR-008 across three die stages. Stage A is the early die state (unconfirmed); Stage B is the mid die state; Stage C is the late die state (unconfirmed). The ODV-002 designation provides an additional die-identity anchor beyond the mintmark repunch, making RPM-001 a doubly attributable variety. The 1934-D Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver at the Denver Mint in just the second year of the Washington Quarter series — John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington having debuted in 1932. West-direction repunched mintmarks result from the D punch being placed too far west before correction, leaving a displaced secondary impression to the left of the final mintmark. Stage B mid die state specimens are the most commonly encountered within the three documented progression stages.
