1934-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

Documented by VarietyVista under die tracking entries UVC-0022 and DMR-004, this 1934-D Washington Silver Quarter DDO-001 displays light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the date — a multi-element doubling pattern affecting both inscriptions and the date numerals across the obverse die face. Three documented die stages reveal an interesting progression: Stage A in early die state (EDS, unconfirmed); Stage B in mid-die-state (MDS) showing a die crack across the bust extending into the field across the northwest tip of the 1 in the date, plus a die crack running east from the eagle's head on the reverse; and Stage C in late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). The Stage B die crack across the bust and into the date area is particularly diagnostic because it connects two separate design zones — the portrait and the date — creating a long, visible fracture line that serves as both an attribution marker and a die-state indicator. The Washington Quarter was designed by John Flanagan based on Jean-Antoine Houdon's famous bust of George Washington, with a heraldic eagle reverse. Struck at the Denver Mint in 1934, only the third year of the Washington Quarter series that began in 1932, this coin was produced in 90% silver composition (90% silver, 10% copper) weighing 6.25 grams with a diameter of 24.26 mm. The 1934-D had a mintage of approximately 3.5 million pieces, a relatively modest figure for the Depression era that makes this an earlier and scarcer date in the Washington Quarter series. As DDO-001 for the date-mint combination, this holds the primary catalog position, and the light but multi-element doubling across IGWT, LIBERTY, and the date provides multiple verification points for attribution.
