1933-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-002

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1933-D 1¢ WRPM-002 and cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #1, Coppercoins 1933D-1MM-001, and a Top 100 RPM by Wexler and CONECA, this Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a prominent repunched mintmark across two documented die stages. In Stage A, a strong vertical bar of the secondary mintmark appears with remnants of a curve inside the primary mintmark. A die gouge (dot) inside the lower opening of the R of PLURIBUS serves as a reverse die marker. Stage B shows a weaker secondary mintmark that is wavy from abrasion, with the curve inside the primary mintmark abraded away on the obverse, while the reverse die gouge is abraded and metal pull lines develop through UNUM to the rim. The Top 100 RPM designation places this variety among the most significant repunched mintmarks in the Lincoln Cent series. Struck in 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc during the Depression era, the 1933-D had a modest mintage that adds scarcity to this already important variety.
