1933-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Cataloged as UVC-036, DMR-002, this 1933 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a repunched mintmark where evidence of the initial D punch position remains visible alongside the final placement. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A is EDS (unconfirmed), Stage B is MDS (unconfirmed), and Stage C shows both obverse and reverse in LDS. Struck in 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc during the depths of the Great Depression, the 1933-D Wheat Cent had a reduced mintage reflecting the era's contracted economic activity and diminished demand for circulating coinage. Repunched mintmarks resulted from the hand-punching process used to apply the D mintmark to individual working dies at the Denver Mint. The three documented die stages allow collectors to sequence their specimens across the production life of this die pair, with late die state examples in Stage C potentially showing additional wear characteristics that developed as the die approached the end of its service.
