Description

Recognized as a Top 100 RPM by Wexler and CONECA, this 1931 Denver Lincoln wheat cent is cataloged as WRPM-001 and cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #1 and Coppercoins 1931D-1MM-001. Two documented die stages reveal the progressive evolution of this die pair. In Stage A, a strong secondary mintmark is clearly visible alongside a series of short, strong die scratches emanating from the right lower outer loop of the 3 in the date. The reverse in this state shows die scratches north from the outside left leg of the M in UNUM and a north-to-south scratch inside the second U. By Stage B, the upper curve of the secondary mintmark has weakened and acquired a northwest-trending scratch from the right upper side, while the Stage A markers have disappeared. A very light die crack develops over VDB, though it can be difficult to detect on circulated specimens. The reverse shows heavy polishing lines north from E PLURIBUS UNUM. The Top 100 designation reflects the significance of this variety within the Lincoln cent RPM collecting specialty.
