1929-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-002

Description

Struck in the final full year before the stock market crash that would transform American economic life, this 1929 Denver Mint cent carries a repunched D mintmark documented as the second RPM for the date by the Wexler Team (Wexler Variety ID: 1929-D 1¢ WRPM-002). The 1929-D cent had a mintage of 41.73 million pieces — one of the larger Denver productions of the decade — requiring many working dies and correspondingly many individual mintmark applications. Each D was hand-punched into the die face using a hardened letter punch and hammer, and WRPM-002 preserves evidence that at least one of those applications required repositioning. The traces of the initial, rejected punch impression remain visible alongside the final placement, creating the doubled appearance that defines a repunched mintmark. Pre-Depression era Lincoln cents in higher grades can be challenging to locate, as heavy circulation during the downturn wore many coins to lower grade levels.
