1929-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Classified as Class V counterclockwise (CCW) spread from a pivot at 5:00, this first documented doubled die obverse for the 1929-D Lincoln Wheat Cent shows doubling on the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST. Class V pivoted hub doubling occurs when the hub rotates slightly between impressions during die manufacture, and on this variety the pivot at the 5:00 position means the greatest displacement appears on design elements farthest from that point — the IGWT letters on the upper obverse field. Attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-V, Coppercoins 1929D-1DO-002, and Wexler Variety ID 1929-D 1c WDDO-001, this variety benefits from triple independent attribution. Obverse die markers note middle die state with the mint mark position serving as a secondary diagnostic, while the reverse is also in middle die state with no significant markers detected. The 1929-D was struck at the Denver Mint with a mintage of approximately 41.7 million pieces, a healthy figure for the final year before the Depression-era production crashes that would drastically reduce cent mintages through the early 1930s. The multiple cross-references demonstrate the convergence of different variety attribution systems — CONECA, Coppercoins, and Wexler — each independently cataloging the same die variety under their own nomenclature.
