Description

Rated at Interest level 2 and Rarity level 5, this 1925 Philadelphia Peace Dollar variety carries the scarce R-5 designation indicating fewer than 30 examples are estimated to exist. Discovered by David Close, VAM-1H is classified as II 1 B2a with the designation "Double Clash Long Spikes Eagle's Shoulder," describing two separate clash events that left long vertical spike-like impressions rising from the eagle's right shoulder on the reverse. The strongly clashed die shows double long vertical clash spikes, with the left spike faint and the right extending prominently upward to the N of UNUM — making this variety immediately identifiable at moderate magnification. Die clashing occurs when obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, transferring design elements from one die to the other. A double clash means this happened twice, each event leaving its own transferred impressions. The resulting spikes are ghost images of obverse design elements impressed into the reverse die, and their unusual length reaching the inscription makes VAM-1H one of the more visually dramatic clash varieties in the Peace Dollar series.
