1925 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1925 $1 WDDO-002, this doubled die obverse variety appears on a 1925 Peace dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The Peace dollar, designed by Anthony de Francisci, was struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams with a 38.1 mm diameter and a reeded edge. Philadelphia produced 10,198,000 Peace dollars in 1925, a moderate mintage for the series. Minted during the Roaring Twenties, as America experienced post-World War I prosperity and cultural transformation, this coin represents an era of confidence and economic growth. The doubling on WDDO-002 shows very close doubling on the designer's initials and the date, both located at the base of the obverse design near the truncation of Liberty's neck. The subtlety described as "very close" indicates the hub displacement was minimal, requiring careful examination to confirm the doubling is genuine rather than die deterioration or strike doubling. Remarkably, the reverse of this die also carries a doubled die, listed separately in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1925 $1 WDDR-002, making this a dual-variety die where both the obverse and reverse show hub doubling. The reverse doubling shows light doubling on the olive branch and leaves, DOLLAR, and the rays, with two die gouges running through the right leg of the A in PEACE and a small die gouge inside the C of PEACE. Obverse die markers include die scratches running southwest to northeast through TRUST. The existence of hub doubling on both sides of the same die pair is relatively uncommon and raises questions about whether the hubbing anomalies occurred during the same manufacturing session or represent independent events on each die. Die scratches through TRUST on the obverse provide a quick screening marker for collectors examining Peace dollars from this date.
