Description

Discovered by David Close and cataloged as 1G II 1 B2a with ratings of I-2 R-5, this 1925 Philadelphia Mint Peace Dollar carries the designation "Die Gouge Above Reverse Hills." Thin die gouges appear on the reverse between the rays above the right end of the first hill to the right of the mountain — positioned within the sunray design that radiates above the landscape in Anthony de Francisci's reverse composition. Die gouges in this location result from accidental damage to the die surface during handling or preparation, creating incised marks that transfer as raised lines on struck coins. Their placement between rays and above the hills requires examination under magnification to distinguish them from the intentional design elements. Die class II 1 indicates a normal obverse in first subclass, paired with reverse B2a. Philadelphia Mint, 90% silver composition. At R-5 rarity — estimated 30 to 100 known — this variety occupies the "Very Scarce" tier in the Van Allen-Mallis system.
